Background of the Study
The Tiv language, spoken by a large population in Benue State, faces challenges in preservation due to globalization, urban migration, and the dominance of major languages in formal domains. Government policies and community initiatives play a critical role in preserving the Tiv language by promoting its use in education, media, and cultural events (Tiv, 2023). Recent policy interventions have sought to integrate Tiv language instruction into school curricula and encourage the production of Tiv literature and media. These efforts aim to bolster cultural identity and ensure that the language remains a vibrant component of the community’s heritage. However, the effectiveness of these policies is subject to debate, with varying levels of implementation and community acceptance. This study examines the impact of language policies on the preservation of the Tiv language in Benue State by evaluating policy documents, educational practices, and community feedback, thereby identifying factors that support or hinder language maintenance (Agba, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite governmental and community efforts, the preservation of the Tiv language in Benue State faces significant challenges. Limited implementation of language policies, insufficient funding, and a shift towards dominant languages in urban settings undermine Tiv language vitality. This research gap hampers our understanding of the practical impact of these policies on language preservation. The study aims to assess how language policies influence the maintenance of Tiv, identifying the barriers to effective policy execution and proposing measures to strengthen language preservation initiatives (Tiv, 2023).

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a critical evaluation of language policy impacts on the preservation of the Tiv language in Benue State. The findings will guide policymakers, educators, and cultural advocates in formulating more effective language maintenance strategies, ensuring that Tiv remains a vibrant part of the community’s heritage (Tiv, 2023; Agba, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to examining policy impacts on Tiv language preservation in Benue State and does not include other minority languages or regions.
